The Clinical Assessment of Biostim^(¢ç)(RU 41740) on the Respiratory Tract Infection in Children

Abstract
A double-blind trial was performed to investigate the effects of Biostim (Ru 41740), a glycoprotein extract from -Klebsiella pneumoniae, on its efficacy in reducing the number of exacerbations and duration of chronic bronchitis or sinobronchitis and the frequency of recurrence of recurrent URI in 57 evaluable patient, 30 df Bistim treated and 29 of placebo received.
After Biostim trial, we observed the changes of clinical symptoms and side effects and evaluated statistically.
The results were as follows:
1. A significantly (p<0.05) larger number of patients in the treated group(60%) than in the placebo group(19%)had no exacerbations during the follow up period of 6 months.
2. Patients treated with Biostim had significantly fewer and shorter episodes of acute exacerbation.
3. A significantly fewer number of patients in the treated group(20%) than in the placebo group (56%) required antibiotic treatment beyond the follow up period.
4. The responsiveness were observed as mild improvement in 6 cases(20%), moderate improvement in 5 cases(17%), and excellent improvement in 18 cases(60%) in the Biostim-treated group.
5. The side effect of Biostim was not observed during this study. Further study will be needed to determine maintenance of the effect, interval and safety of Biostim therapy.
